Reflective Fieldnote Blog Entry #3

Section #1 - I think that using action research to improve current classroom practices benefits both the teacher and the student. For weeks I have been "spinning my wheels" on the problems but failing to devise a plan to solve these problems. I think I simply needed a plan in place to actively pursue a solution. To me, action research is not merely the recognition of a need, but a snapshot of the need and an objective look at all of the details and consideration of all the possibilities. Now that I have learned the appropriate ways to conduct research within the classroom, I feel that I can proceed to attempt to resolve issues through action research.

Section #2 - One of the results of my action research project is that it has caused me to research method or practices used by other teachers or taught by researchers in the field of education to enhance my students' learning experiences when they are with me and maximize the little time that we have to achieve so much. As I discover the benefits of assigning specific roles to my students during center time, I consider how other classes that I teach might benefit from a similar set up.

Section #3 - Since I am specifically using Kagan structures into practice, and as I realize the benefits of cooperative Kagan learning structures, I find myself even more an advocate of their ideas. I would recommend to all teachers, not just ESL, to attend one of their workshops or borrow one of their books from a colleague.

  1. I have loved all the Kagan strategies that I have seen so far. However, I haven't ever taken a workshop or read any of his books. That is high on my list of things to do. Hopefully next year I will be able to take advantage of it.

  2. I agree--the Kagan strategies seems to work well with all students including first and second language learners.
